Ronnie Robinson replaced Terry Phelan at Left Back and Lyndon Simmonds came on for Tommy Wright at Inside Left, while Hanrahan replaced Mark Hughes at Centre Forward for Manchester. The game was restricted to sixty minutes and the receipts were £25,000. Frank Stapleton gave Manchester a ninth minute lead when he scored from the spot. George McCluskey equalized after twenty-one minutes but Mark Hughes scored a minute later. It was not until a minute before full-time that John Sheridan netted the United equaliser.
